FAQ

Why do we cancel the event?

Due do the Corona virus, and the regulations that apply for the moment from the Swedish and Norweigan government we unfortunately have to cancel Mountain Trail 2020. The situation is critical and we simply can’t guarantee that the virus won’t be spread at the event. Right now there are over 100 people registered and for everyone’s safety we at Icebug have decided to cancel the event July 3 – 5

This is sad but unfortunately the only responsible thing we can do now to prevent the spread. Stay home stay safe!

The Stages

The Icebug Xperience Mountain Trail Weekend is divided into three different stages in the Rjukan area. You will be running or hiking on everything from narrow forest trails and gravel roads to mountain tops and wide-open marshes.

We offer three stages – which are three completely different experiences.

Please note that due to the terrain in the mountains, there will be no water or energy stations. You are able to drink fresh mountain water from creeks and springs at your own risk (it’s possible to purify the water, but it is not common to do so before drinking in Scandinavian mountains), and our guides will carry some energy in case of emergency.

VEMORK VERTICAL

17 K

16,6 km, 970 m up, 590 m down

With a total elevation of almost 1 000 metres, Vemork Vertical is the most challenging stage of Icebug Xperience Mountain Trail Weekend – but also the most beautiful one! This stage starts close to Vemork, the former hydroelectric power plant, which was destroyed by Norwegian saboteurs during World War II, to prevent the Germans from building an atomic bomb.

The first part of the stage follows narrow hiking trails in the surrounding forests, until you reach the small village Sestali after 7,5 km. Enjoy an energy break with pancakes made by local farmers before you head on for the biggest challenge of the day.

A 300 m climb awaits, and then you will do a traverse along the Gausta peak. The end of the stage is located at the foot of the mountain. From here you can choose between hiking to the Gausta peak or taking the train through a tunnel to the top (1 883 m), or take a shuttle bus back to the hotel.

Note: The fee for the train to the Gausta peak is not included. This is paid on site. Read more about the Gaustabanen train here.

EAGLE'S PEAK

17 K

17,4 km, 660 m up, 660 m down

The first day of Icebug Xperience Mountain Trail Weekend takes place at Gaustablikk Høyfjellshotell. As a warm welcome, the stage starts with a 100 m climb, before you enter a flatter part of the stage in a forest area, where you will run or hike on narrow hiking trails. The big challenge of the day starts at approximately 7 km. From here 3 tough kilometres awaits , which will take you from an altitude of 910m to the peak Ørnenipa, located 1 333 m above sea level.

From here, get ready to enjoy a fast – and fun – downhill session for almost 3 km. The final part of the stage goes through the elvish Norwegian forest, and arrives back at Gaustablikk Høyfjellshotell. The first day is done – but more challenges await right around the corner!

SABOTEUR'S TRAIL

20 K

19,7 km, 770 m up, 1 210 m down

The third and final stage of Icebug Xperience Mountain Trail Weekend is a trip through history. This stage mostly follow the famous hiking route The Saboteur’s Trail, which has an interesting history. This route was used by the Norwegian saboteurs during a secret mission inWorld War II, when they had to blow up the heavy water plant at Vemork to prevent the Germans from building an atomic bomb.

The stage starts with a steep climb through a forest area, where you will climb almost 300 altitude meters during 3 kilometers. The course becomes flatter after 4 kilometers, when you get above the tree line. Now awaits 10 kilometers of flat trails on an open mountain. You will pass plenty of small, clearwater lakes and rivers where you can refill your bottles, and once in a while you’ll see signs with information about the saboteurs.

The final part of the stage is a downhill sprint on a switchback road. You will descend almost 500 metres in 3,5 kilometers, so remember to save some energy for your front thighs! Be proud of the experience you just accomplished!
